Working in Honduras and Jamaica

J.Y. and Linda Jones have been going on medical missions trips since 1986, when Honduras was (and still usually is) the destination. Since then they have participated in 24 mission trips, including five trips to Jamaica and one to Kenya. They try to make this an annual excursion, and their focus is not only doing cataract and other eye surgery, but also spreading the Gospel of Jesus Christ to hurting people. Up to this point J.Y. has done over 1,000 eye operations in these countries, and countless people have been exposed to the Gospel as a result.

Modern eye surgery is done in Honduras under an operating microscope. J.Y. has accumulated many items of modern equipment to provide the best in eye care in a developing country. Surgery done in Jamaica is now usually handled by his partners, leaving J.Y. free to concentrate on Honduras, where he puts his Spanish language skills to work to the fullest.

Eye surgery in Honduras requires a patch postoperatively most of the time, unlike in the USA, where the technique is usually slightly different. Every patient and their families hear a quality Gospel presentation by a hospital chaplain prior to their surgery. Many patients in Honduras (and Jamaica) are victims of total cataract, meaning they can see only light prior to their surgery. The patch is removed the following morning, and usually there are many happy faces all around. J.Y. likes to say that the Lord uses his hands to supply physical vision to the patient, while the work of the Holy Spirit often uses the occasion to impart spiritual vision to the patient and those who accompany him.
